Cam is the result of my senior thesis (undergrad Industrial Design). I chose to develop a mid to high end digital video camcorder. Beyond the issue of usability, I wanted to simplify the camera and strip it of excess. The camcorder’s main function is, of course, to record. It should do that extremely well and its shape should reflect the function of the parts.
My goal was to keep each element of the camera true to itself and to refine, refine, and refine some more. Each main element must be honest, for example, the barrel reflects the natural tendency of a lens to be cylindrical in shape, and so on. The strict linear elements include the circuit boards and recording media, thus they are oriented in that manner vertically.
Using this approach allowed me to focus more on the details and solve usability problems.
