Hi, my name is Josh Teague. I currently live in Atlanta with my wife Lauren. However we’ll soon be moving to Seattle as I start a job at Google as an Interaction Designer. I just recently completed my transition into the wonderful world of user experience by getting a masters degree in HCI at Georgia Tech—where I studied and practiced Industrial Design as an undergrad.
Since my undergraduate education was in Industrial Design, I think that my design sensibilities—primarily honed on the creation of three-dimensional products—afford me unique perspective on the creation of two-dimensional products (such as screen-based interfaces). Product design education taught me to simplify and make innovative products with design so sublime it practically belies the product’s function. I strongly follow the theory that a well designed 1.0 product happens when you can’t take away anymore—when reduction, not feature addition, has been the driving force in development.
I primarily view God’s creation as my ultimate inspiration source. Take a simple fruit, for example. The banana is an excellent example of design gone incredibly right. The banana peel is unbelievably efficient: It provides natural padding, is perforated to tear easily, and even serves as a handle. Not to mention how its curved shape bends towards your mouth. Finally, the banana peel is bio-degradable and fully sustainable. The design is self-sufficient and has stood the test of time. Products should stand the test of time—they shouldn’t just be an exercise in leveraging the latest trend off the urban sidewalk.
Here’s some more stuff keeping me inspired:
